This Day in History- March 16th- West Point is Established Facing the possibility of another war with Great Britain, Congress, on this day in 1802 established the first military school in the United States- which we know now as West Point. The school was built on the west bank of New York’s Hudson River for the purpose of educating and training young men in the theory and practice of military science.
It was understood then, as it is now, that wars are not necessarily won or lost based on which side has the bigger army, fastest ships, or best weapons. The key to victory begins with the proper training and equipping of leaders.
The Bible frequently depicts the struggles of the Christian walk in military terminology. Whether it is referring to the believer donning the “full armor of God” (Ephesians 6:14-17) or our weapons for the “pulling down of strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:14), there is indeed a war going on, and we are in the thick of it, whether we like it or not.
And as it is true with the warfare of this world, the success or failure of the Divine commission we have rides on the training and equipping of the officers and leaders, as well as all of those down the chain of command. We already have the best weapons, and with the Holy Spirit indwelling, we have all the firepower anyone could ever need. It is just a matter of training.
The equipping and training, rest assured, is not intended just for those who are on staff at a church somewhere, or are designated as “clergy”. We are all part of this epic battle, and all have our domain where God has called us to minister. When we were called into the body of Christ, God intended to equip and empower us for a purpose. We actually cooperate with God’s plan when we discipline ourselves, and allow ourselves to be trained for that high calling. That may take the form of intensive study of the Bible, regular attendance of church and Sunday School, and even “hands on” training, which may be volunteering in some aspect of local ministry at church. The point is this: God’s training is not a spectator sport. It requires our active participation.
Just like with the Marines, God is looking for a “few good men (and women)”. How do you feel you are being trained right now? Do you feel that you are sidelined, far from the action where God may want you? If so, make a decision to get the equipping and training God has for you.
“Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.” (Psalm 144:1) |
