There is a lot of interest today in what is called the “paranormal”. Ghosts, spirits, or whatever you want to call them, play a role in that. In popular culture, we are led to believe that a dead individual may “haunt” this earth, or may exist in some plane connected to our world if they died with some unfinished business, or had an abrupt or violent death, or some other such contrived reason.
The Bible, however, doesn't make any room for a class of dead souls floating around in a restless state. According to the Bible, when a person dies, they either go directly to be in the Lord's presence ( II Corinthians 5:6-8), or to a place of punishment where they are held until Judgment Day (II Peter 2:9). The idea that disembodied spirits would reside in a physical dwelling, with nothing else to do but periodically try to scare people is neither supportable in any biblical sense, nor is it reasonable. If you had died, and had "no where to go", would you spend your time making random objects levitate or monopolize your time playing the stereotypical ghost in some old house? If you were dead, and really wanted to communicate some cryptic message ( no pun intended) to the living, why wait for a seance so you can strut your stuff and levitate some objects? Why not just pick up a crayon and write them a message at your convenience? How about a fax? Or e-mail? For a “ghost” that has some telekinetic powers, it would be mighty easy to send a text message if you really had something to say. And if ghosts are really the disembodied spirits of loved ones, why are they always doing their deeds in dark scary houses? (I have a little first hand experience with this, since the house I grew up in had a significant number of so-called “poltergeist” dramas…but that is for another day!). From my experience, as well as from the Bible, I would assert that what we call “ghosts” are just typically manifestations of demons. In the grand scheme of things, demons are in a pathetic plight. Although they once knew the power and authority of being agents of God, they forfeited it in a vain act of rebellion with Lucifer ( a.k.a. Satan). Consequently, they are riddled with envy that they can never share in the glory of heaven, while relatively ignorant human beings who trust in Christ and receive the gift of eternal life will attain that which these demons so desperately lack. These pathetic creatures have no substantial power to speak of, and their only offensive weapon is to try to deceive individuals away from the life-saving truth of the Gospel of God. Furthermore, they know that they have only a limited time to operate. At the end of the age, they will be cast in to the Lake of Fire, never to deceive anyone ever again. They would love to convince people that there is not a personal God, and that we all will not have to give an accounting of our lives.
Therefore, they utilize the "ghost" masquerade. The world-view that has usually promoted by ghosts when communicated through spiritualists, mediums and necromancers typically excludes the existence of an Omnipotent, Sovereign, and Just God who will judge the destiny of every individual soul. Demons are the supernatural force that has buoyed these anti-biblical beliefs up by periodically lending their assistance to a spiritist or medium, and help give credence to such teaching.
So the bottom line is that no human soul falls through the cracks after death. They are either ushered into God’s presence, or held in a temporal place of punishment until the Judgment Day. The phenomenon that we refer to as “ghosts” are the pathetic antics of demons who want to distract the unlearned from the truth of the Gospel. The majority of Spiritists are simple frauds, while those who demonstrate some type of paranormal legitimacy, do so with the empowerment of demonic entities. |
