Horoscopes and astrology are fairly popular practices today.  Interestingly enough, the signs of the zodiac are mentioned in the Bible!  You can find them in the Book of Job, chapters 9:9, 38:31,32, and 5:8.   Repeatedly, we are assured that it was God who made the constellations.

However, it is important to note that nowhere does God approve of trying to use horoscopes or astrological “signs” to predict the future.  As matter of fact, such a practice is condemned.  In Isaiah 47:13, the Lord mocks the astrologers (equating them with sorcerers) at the inability for such practices to effectively save anyone, or foretell the future.   The primary reason for this is that the stars do not control our future.  It would be fatalistic to think that you could never amount to more than what the stars had determined for you.  God, however, is a God of hope.  He has a plan in mind for you, that is fulfilling, and exactly what your heart desires.

Thousands of years ago, people originally put credence in astrology because they thought that each planet was representative of a god, and that they all revolved around the earth.  One's temperament and destiny was thought to be predetermined based on which planet you were born under.  If you were born under Jupiter ( the Greek Jove) you would be jolly and "jovial".  If you were born under Mars, you would tend to be antagonistic, or "martial".  This idea of course was thoroughly discredited when people realized that the sun was the center of the solar system, not the earth.

Some believers in astrology have tried to defend it, noting the gravitation effects of large planetary bodies had on the earth ( i.e. the effects of the moon on tides).  Anything with mass exerts a gravitational force, therefore, they said, a planet or star system would exert a force that would predispose our dispositions and shape our destiny.  Unfortunately, we also now know that the gravitational effects of the stars themselves at this distance are negligible.  As a matter of fact, since a gravitational force is weakened exponentially with regard to distance, we can truthfully say that the doctor who delivered us at birth exerted a greater gravitational force on us than any star other than the sun.  Science has now established that our dispositions and characteristics are more a product of our genetic heritage and the accumulation of our social experiences throughout our lives, rather than a static, unchanging destiny determined by stars and planets.

Another problematic issue for those who put stock in astrology is the fact that the astrological signs today no longer correspond to the dates throughout the year that they were originally assigned to.  When we look at the signs of the zodiac, supposedly our birth date is assigned to one of them based on the ecliptic, or path of the sun, and it's relation to the stars throughout the year.  The ancient Babylonians, Chaldeans and Sumerians were incredible at astronomy and they flawlessly calculated the appropriate dates when the path of the sun and moon would seem to intersect the different signs of the zodiac.  However, because there is a slight wobble in the earth's axis, the dates that we adhere to and the actual signs of the zodiac themselves having been slowly drifting apart!  This is called the “procession of the equinoxes”.  They are now off by a full thirty days!  That means that if you were born in the middle of June as a "Gemini" your not really a Gemini, but a Taurus!   To many who have had what seemed to be accurate readings in the past, this may come as some shock.  Every astrological chart, since they are based on the reckoning of these ancient dating methods, is completely worthless in determining a person's horoscope.

So, from both a biblical and scientific viewpoint, astrology is completely worthless. Some might object on the grounds that the magi or wisemen who sought out the child Jesus were essentially astrologers.   That is actually a larger discussion on the original purpose of the zodiac, which is an article forthcoming.
