Conflict Between Faith and Reason? Print E-mail

Is there a conflict between faith and reason- Science and Belief?   Many people think so.   This is dramatized in one of the corniest, yet most profound episodes of the original Star Trek series.  It involved a chance encounter of the Enterprise crew meeting with the Greek god Apollo on a distant planet.

After a few run ins with the crew, Apollo realizes that mankind no longer needs a god to worship, and in a moving monologue, tearfully fades into oblivion to join the other now extinct gods.   This of course, was a shot across the bow of organized religion, inferring that a “mature” human race will eventually dispense with any belief in God.

Since that episode aired in the 1960’s the apparent struggle between secularists (who promote a strict separation of any religious element and public life) and theists, who believe that God should occupy an important role in civic affairs, has only intensified.   Struggles still go on in the form of the Creationist/Evolution debate, the place of emblems in our culture, like “In God We Trust” on our money, and the like.

Unfortunately, many have thought that the lines of battle are between those educated with the tools of science, and those only armed with a devotion to a certain faith.  That view is superficial and largely incorrect.  The fact of the matter is that the more we know about, and objectively consider the world around us, the more inescapable the conclusion that a Sovereign God superintends over our universe.  There are a tremendous number of people who are highly educated that have become convinced that God, particularly the God of the Bible, indeed exists, and is necessary for us to understand where we came from and where we are going as a species.   Periodically, I will be either publishing here, or on one of my other sites, some short essays discussing pertinent topics, like Intelligent Design, the “Reasonableness” of Christianity, logical proofs of God’s existence,  plus some new inquiries into current research of quantum mechanics.   There may also be some essays on cultural phenomenon such as the prophecies about the Christ from the Bible, the Sibylline Oracles, and Mythology, as well as the universality of the Christian ethic.  Feel Free to comment or contribute.
